Arnold Schwarzenegger Part 1
Introducing the one that made all the others look good in comparison – the Terminator, advertising an energy drink by Takeda pharmaceuticals. For some background information, keep reading after the video post.
First of all, the drink is called “Alinamin V” (アリナミンV).
Secondly, the word “daijobu” (大丈夫 / だいじょうぶ) in Japanese roughly translates to “fine” or “ok”.
The producers of this commercial obviously decided to do a bit of a “wordplay”, and incorporate the word “daijobu” with the drink name, to create a catchphrase. They decided to only change the last syllable of the word – “bu”, which is in the Japanese diction, to “V” (of Alinamin V), which is not native to Japanese diction. The letter “v” is often pronounced “buiee” (bu-Ee) by native Japanese.
So, as a result, you get an Austrian ex-Hollywood star-come-Californian-Governor saying “Dai-Jo-Buee” on a Japanese TV Commercial. What a crazy world we live in!
By the way, stay posted – there will be more in this series in the future.
Dear God, how old is this?
Arnold did a bunch of these in the late 80s, particularly during the economic bubble in Japan.
There are plenty of them, I’ll be posting them in the near future, so make sure to subscribe via RSS, or bookmark the site!
Cheers,
